Flour, sugar & gold prices soar in Kabul

KABUL: Prices of flour, sugar and gold have increased in Kabul during the outgoing week.

Abdul Basir, a jeweler in the upscale Shar-i-Now market, told Pajhwok Afghan News price of one gram Arabian gold jumped from 1,050 to 1,090 afghanis, while the same quantity of Iranian gold was sold for 900 afghanis as compared to 870 of the last week.

Khan Ali, a retailer in the Karta-i-Seh locality of this capital city, said price of 100 kilogram sack of flour increased from 1,680 to 1,720 Afs this week. He attributed the raise to increase in flour prices in the neighbouring Pakistan.

Khan Ali said price of a five kilogram tin of cooking oil went up by five afghanis, while price of 50 kilograms sack of sugar increased by 20 afghanis from 1,220 of the last week to 1,240 during the concluding week.

Prices of other kitchen items such as rice, black and green tea and pulses stayed stable, said Mr. Khan Ali.

A slight increase was also seen in price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Mir Wais, a gas seller in the Asamayee market, told Pajhwok that rate of one kilogram of LPG moved from 43 to 45 Afs. Gas prices have registered manifold increase over the previous two months. 

Price of petrol and diesel remained unchanged and the two commodities were sold for 40 and 34 afghanis/litre respectively.

Haji Muhammad Rafi, head of the money-changers association in Shahzada Market, said purchase price of one US dollar was 50 afghanis, while 1,000 Pakistani rupees were available for 829 Afs. Purchase price of one US dollar was 49.80 afghanis and that of 1,000 Pakistan rupees 822 afghanis last week.
